Music for a Chaotic World

Creative self-expression is as fundamental to life as eating or sleeping. In service of that need, my studio employs an efficient, holistic approach that can help you achieve your musical goals no matter what age or level of experience.

I embarked on my musical journey 23 years ago, starting with classical piano and violin. While piano remained my primary musical focus, my curiosity led me to hone additional skills, most notably including: composing, arranging, music production, and singing.

Growing up in the highly competitive community of Livingston, NJ, I learned to balance music with school and numerous extracurricular activities including swimming, martial arts, chess, weightlifting, and linguistics. During the past decade working as a teacher, this experience has allowed me to help many busy students balance their own musical studies with other interests and career paths.

From 2015 to 2022, I earned my Music Bachelor’s degree in School and Community Settings and a Master’s Degree in Piano Performance. During that time, I had the opportunity to study with highly respected musicians (in masterclasses, courses, and lessons), including:

Mark Pakman, Sondra Tammam, Dr. David Witten, Wu Han, Dr. Heather J. Buchanan, Steven W. Ryan, Tony Cho, Younhee “Yuni” Kim, Soyeon Kim, Eric Olsen, Markand Thakar, and more.

It is thanks to the patient guidance afforded to me by these amazing artists that I am the musician and teacher I am today.

The Four Pillars of Piano Playing

Playing piano is one of the most complex tasks humans can perform, and yet most of it can be summarized in 4 main ideas: Physical Technique, Ear Training, Music Theory, and, most importantly, Imagination/Musicality.

Physical Technique - How we move at the piano in order to produce a desired sound in an efficient, healthy way.

Ear Training - The ability to imagine, produce, and recognize specific intervals and/or notes.

Music Theory - Codified patterns and terminology recognized throughout music that help us to understand how it was developed, better appreciate the nuances of composers’ creative choices, and reproduce effects for our own creative expression.

Imagination/Musicality - The ability of a person to appreciate the various elements and nuances of music and shape them in a way to convey ideas, emotions, colors, or effects to the listener.  Although some will naturally have an easier time at first, this is still a skill that can be developed by anyone through thoughtful practice.

These ideological pillars, though relatively simple in concept, are vast in scope.  However, for as much as the world lauds prodigies seemingly born with talent and tortured artists killing themselves for their work, the truth is, much of what music has to offer can be achieved by anyone through relatively brief, but consistent, and deliberate effort.
